WHIMSICAL COLLECTION It seems that in our western society we value financial and technological growth more than the animal well-being. In order to expand our territory and grow bigger, we tend to take away from nature by cutting down forests and hunting different species until their extinction. An interesting manifestation found within thin this year’s Whimsical Collection stand at the Ambiente fair 2020, is the brand-new children collection. In a playful and colorful way, the collection sketches the image of the current situation in the African wildlife. The thought behind this project is to manifest to children that plants and wildlife are just as important as humanity. That we should live

FURNITURE RE-DONE Visual artists and their work are interesting to follow since they often detect and visualize what’s going on in society. Markus Friedrich Staab created a collection of customized furniture with playful designs that represent our trend ‘Unchain the Rebel’: Furniture re-done. The collection is appealing to the eyes: bright colours, interesting materials and compositions. Furniture re-done are individual pieces of second hand furniture. He uses second hand mass produced and homogenous products and turns them into something unique that takes on an identity of its own. One piece of the collection we discovered at Ambiente 2020 was Peak of a Century “blue and green”. It’s a Fren

VERSATILE VAGABOND Have you ever wanted to just grab your bags and take the first flight to a country where you don’t know anyone or anything? Versatile Vagabond created a design where you can skip the whole process of packing your bags. Just grab the garment and leave, whenever you want to. The design, created by Shanmei Yao, is a piece of functional clothing that can be transformed into a coat or bag. The idea behind it is that you are able to ‘wear’ your luggage instead of using a suitcase or bag to transport it. The design is multifunctional and offers multiple combinations, so you can wear it as a coat, but you can also use it as a wall decoration where you can fill the pockets. The des

PLAY AROUND Life is a playground, according to German designer Nikolas Miranda. Sustaining this message, he created Mayamot. Mayamot is a lamp made out of different compartments, adjustable to your likings. The motto of the design is ‘Enlighten your inner child’ which was referred to by using bold colours and robot-like designs. The lamp consists of twelve parts and therefore allows and encourages you to build it up in different ways and disassemble it again. The twelve compartments are shaped in an abstract, colourful way. Nikolas Miranda used these compartments to implement the light components. It is possible to rotate each element either horizontally or vertically. When you rotate the co

BEAUTIFUL MESS Every (bed)room has a chair who ends up covered with a pile of clothes; worn but not quite ready to be washed yet. Marie Radke created a solution for this common occurrence with her furniture series ‘Familie Hempel’. The series consists of four pieces: Regina, Bruno, Sepp and Hans. Together they represent the ‘Familie Hempel”, a common used phrase in Germany to describe a messy room or household. The design of ‘Regina’ represents a high seat, perfect to store close but also to overview the mess in your space. ‘Bruno’ is designed to store small garments such as socks. The character is described as sneaky, inspired by the gaps between sofa cushions. ‘Sepp’ is a bench, designe

INTO THE MOULD What is a better way of integrating nature into your home than placing glassware inspired and mold out of a tree trunk’s core into it? Product designer Samuel Reis used this ideology to create Cerne, which is Portuguese for ‘core’. The Cerne collection consists of different kinds of glassware such as decanters, drinking glasses and vases. The glass objects obtain their interesting shape by using a technique of blowing into wooden tree trunk moulds. The trees that are being used for the process are Portuguese Carob trees which are naturally hollow inside. The glassware is designed by Samuel Reis. He is an observer and collector of things from the natural environment who incorpo

GOING FOR A SWIM Have you ever wanted to add a swimming pool to your interior? Estúdio Rain designed a set of low tables that are transformed into swimming pools by adding removable ladders to the tables, called SWIMMING POOL TABLES. The collection is composed of organically shaped coffee tables with several size options that may be used together or separately. The tables are made of matte powder-coated steel with a glass top. The glass has a light blue colour which refers to the water in a swimming pool. The organically shaped steel borders create the whimsical feeling of a puddle, translating to the fluid character of water. The ladders can be placed in different positions. The inspiration
